A24 INSTITUTION RESEARCH
History
Founded in New York City by 3 co-founders in 2012. Daniel Katz being CEO and co-founder, with David Fenkel and John Hodges being the other two co-founders. A24 had a successful breakthrough due to films like ‘Midsommar’ 2019 and Uncut Gems 2019. Then in 2022, A24's ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’ became their most successful film, winning 7 Oscars.
A24 went from being a small distribution company to being its own production and distribution company who are now known for their own styles and aesthetics throughout the film industry. Many people look up to A24 and their journey as it really is one of inspiration.
Horizontal Integration
In order for A24 to promote their company and films, they started to create partnerships with Apple TV and with film festivals like Sundance and Cannes Film Festival. Since 2022, when ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’ became their biggest hit film, their partnerships resulted in a massive increase in their viewers and partnerships.
Vertical Integration
A24 directs, produces, releases and screens all their own films. They created films like “Uncut Gems’ (2019) and ‘The Smashing Machine’ (2025). A24 doesn’t have their own theatre space, so all their movies are just distributed under the brand name A24. However, they do have exclusive screenings and home-release dates that are partnered with Apple TV, as well as Amazon Prime Video. A24 being their own creative agency gives them the opportunity to have their own distinct film style and aesthetic which is very well-known; people can easily guess that a film was created by A24 solely because of the cinematics and aesthetics.
Production
Instead of putting together large sums of money for extraordinary films, A24 utilises low to mid budgets for their films, since al; their films are very emotionally driven by the actors and characters.
A24 doesn’t have any in-house cinematographers, so they partner with different studios and cinematographers so their budget can be put into post-production editing and marketing instead.
Midsommar 2019
Directed by Ari Aster the film explores Dani Ardor’s trauma by a recent tragedy of the murder-suicide of her family. She goes with her boyfriend Christian on a trip to Hårga (a remote Swedish land) to enjoy their midsummer festivities. The community at the midsummer festival appears to be welcoming and happy - completely contrasting Dani’s state at that time in life. The festival with time reveals itself to be a violent series of Pagan witch rituals. Dani and Christian grow apart, Christian becomes distant, Dani is cultivated by the pagan mindset. Dani watches her own boyfriend die, and her final expression; a smile, symbolising her ‘transformation’ into a Hårga community pagan witch.
